These students will develop their leadership skills, environmental understanding, and participate in cultural exchange in Guatemala! Over 8 days, they will learn from Indigenous environmental leaders. During travel to the Ixcán region, they will learn from the local Mayan community about efforts to protect the tropical rainforest, Chixoy River, and other environmental treasures and resources while participating in cultural immersion.
A community member from the Ixcán in Guatemala, Jose Gomez, was on the NMSU campus for the Indigenous Symposium: Water Protectors from November 14th-15th as a speaker. His visit began this reciprocal exchange. We are so excited to offer this as the first annual Indigenous Exchange Experience and look forward to a beautiful and fruitful exchange!
Eligibility:
- Identify as Indigenous
- Full-time student
- In good standing with the university
- 18 years or older at time of application
